Staying True to Our Principles

The Declaration of Independence stated that all men and women are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, and that governments exist to protect and defend those rights….

We remember the great struggles which led to the abolition of slavery, the extension of voting rights, the growth of the labor movement, and the gradual effort to eliminate every kind of racism and prejudice directed at further waves of new Americans.

This shows that, when a country is determined to remain true to its principles, those founding principles based on respect for human dignity, it is strengthened and renewed.

Reflection: A popular bumper sticker says, “Freedom isn’t free.” Those stickers remind people that political freedom also comes with a cost: there are soldiers who died in order to defend and protect the country and the freedom that Americans can easily take for granted.

But fighting for freedom isn’t just for the military. Being true to the founding principles of the Declaration of Independence requires an ongoing commitment; it requires a willingness to sacrifice for the dignity of all, which is founded in our certainty that we are all God’s children and that his love is for all of us.
